⭕Test drive: PHPStorm vs Atom || Web Development Coding Tools

, Picking a code editor is tough. Just like in JavaScript, it’s easy to get burnt out on choices when new stuff is being released every day, promising you to save you time and money while offering a whole new world of functionality.

I recently took the plunge and invested in PHPStorm. This is one of the few IDEs that, you know…Costs money. At first, it doesn’t really make sense that an IDE would cost money, because so many of them (as well as ‘plain’ code editors) offer amazing functionality with tons of packages, add-ons, and other bells and whistles.

However, when you’re behind a computer all day, even the smallest things that cost your a time investment can really add up. This is where I think PHPStorm really comes out ahead. Unlike Atom, you aren’t pecking around for packages to add on to your editor for functionality. They are baked right in with PHPStorm. For example, I quickly launched a BASH terminal inside PHPStorm, while able to specify what kind of projects I was about to work on (WordPress, etc.) so that the program would intelligently understand what coding standards to use.

In this video, I’m doing a little walkthrough tour of some basic stuff PHPStorm offers as an IDE, and how its price tag just might be justified for PHP developers.
